Nestled between the striking peaks of Gamsstein (1,774 m), Voralpe (1,770 m) and Königsberg (1,452 m), the nature park lies entirely within the municipality of Hollenstein an der Ybbs. A diverse landscape of forests, alpine pastures, gorges and impressive views unfolds across some 5,000 hectares.

There is plenty for children and families to discover in the Lower Austria Eisenwurzen Nature Park. The playgrounds at Promau and Treffenguthammer are perfect for playing and relaxing.
On family-friendly hiking trails, such as the Schaueck hike (Spitzhiatl Challenge), you can actively experience and explore nature.
The range of activities is complemented by programmes run by our nature guides, as well as a variety of events for children and families taking place throughout the year.

The Lower Austrian Eisenwurzen Nature Park is home to an impressive variety of rare animal and plant species. Particularly noteworthy are plants such as the anemone-leaved pasque flower, an Alpine endemic found only in the north-eastern Limestone Alps, and the Clusius primrose. Numerous rare orchid species, such as the lady’s slipper, the marsh helleborine and the broad-leaved marsh orchid, are also native to this area.
Among the animals, the capercaillie, black grouse and hazel grouse are among the distinctive forest dwellers, whilst golden eagles circle above the mountains. Alpine newts and fire salamanders inhabit gorges and watercourses. Rare butterflies such as the yellow-edged fritillary and the black-spotted ant-blue, as well as the delicate stone crayfish in clear streams, highlight the extraordinary biodiversity. Even less conspicuous species such as the mountain snail or the notched ant contribute to the uniqueness of this natural area.
