They provide important habitat structures and food sources for many animal species and, thanks to their often millennia-old tradition of use, are closely linked to the development of the cultural landscape and the distinctive character of the nature parks.
As part of the ‘Naturparke verwurzeln’ initiative, particularly characteristic tree and shrub species are selected jointly. Fruit from wild stands of these species is collected, the seeds processed, and the offspring grown into young plants.
Once the plants have grown, they are to be established within the municipal area and in the gardens of the nature park communities as part of attractive schemes under the motto “Bring a piece of the nature park into your garden”. This creates a living connection between the local population and the nature park and makes an important contribution to the conservation of regional tree and shrub diversity within the nature parks.
Project organiser
This project is organised and managed by the Association of Austrian Nature Parks (VNÖ), with project supervision provided by Mr Klaus Wanninger and his team from the LACON office (Landscape Planning and Consulting) in close coordination with the Regional Woody Plant Propagation Association (RGV).
“Naturparke verwurzeln” – we’re on board!
The buckthorn, yew and juniper were selected for this initiative. Yew berries have already been collected and professionally cleaned. Until they are used, the young plants are being grown in a nursery under the careful supervision of the Regional Woody Plant Propagation Association (RGV). They are being cultivated in a forest nursery and in an earth cellar.
